‘The Church's Holy War’ in Church Army gazette

“A children's procession: For the last three months a Children's Service has been carried on here. In connection with it, our first Church Army Entertainment was given to the Children. A procession of over 100 children started off at 2 p.m., with banners and a brass band, going nearly all round our parish and returning for a tea-party, which was kindly got ready by the friends of the Mission. The band played during the time the children were having their tea, and it was good both to hear and to see so many children enjoying themselves. After the tea was over, a Magic Lantern was given, and the room was completely packed, until it was hard to get a glimpse of the comical magic lantern story of the chimney sweeper and the whitewasher. All separated, having fully enjoyed themselves. Some of the children fairly danced at hearing the band, as it is a thing very rarely heard in this part of the country. The leading banner bore the words, 'Onward, Christian Soldiers,' and was presented by Lady Donaldson. Several others bore other mottos. The last one, which was the biggest, had the words: 'God bless our Children.' We believe He has done so, and is still blessing them.”
