“This afternoon I gave all the school-children a treat of cake, with coffee and tea. Tables and forms were arranged the whole length of the school-room, the tables being covered with white cloths: cups and saucers were laid on either side, and down the centre were plates filled with excellent cakes. The whole was a perfectly novel sight, and excited much curiosity both among old and young. Twenty girls seated themselves on one side of the table, and twenty-three boys on the other, and I had the pleasure of presiding; while Mrs. Hunter, at a side table, with her female assistants, supplied the little party with coffee and tea. Many of their parents and friends, whom I had invited, were present to witness the interesting sight. I must say, to the praise of these dear children, that, although they have been so recently taken from their native woods and wilderness, they behaved in the most orderly manner at table, and conducted themselves with as much propriety during their repast as children on similar occasions in my own country: they were exceedingly careful not to soil the cloths with their coffee or tea, and not a vessel was broken. In the evening I gave a magic-lantern exhibition: the school-room was crowded, and all were highly amused and astonished at this wonderful lantern. ”
