SPAIN, Reverend T. Dixon (1846-1925) – lecturer
C.E.T.S. Lichfield Branch – organiser
“Mr. T. Dixon Spain, the Organising Secretary, paid his annual visit to Derby recently. The Diocesan School-Room, Friargate, had been kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. P.J. Hammond, some 300 persons assambling in response to a very artistic and a quaint announcement in 'Ye old English' Style. The Rev. James Chancellour, president, was in the chair, supported by Mr. R.A.R. Jones, J.P. and other influential parishioners. After a devotional exercises a glee, 'Lift up the Temperance Banner', was sung by the Temperance Choir, and songs given by Messrs. Hall and Badderey. Mr. Spain then exhibited, with the aid of the magic lantern, a series of views, the original sketches of which were from the pen of the great artist George Cruishank, in a very graphic manner depicting the consequences of the introduction of intoxicating liquors into a home, rendering the once happy and well-to-do family one of misery and poverty. On the conclusion of this series of pictures some members and friends kindly enlivened the evenings entertainment by songs. Mr. R.A.R. Jones, J.P., proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Spain, and in doing so said all could accept his assurance that the pictures which had been shown them were not overdrawn, for, as one of the Borough-magistrates, he was continually having people before him charged with participating in some way in such cases as delineated.”
