GLASSPOOL, Alfred J. (1849-1928) – lecturer
C.E.T.S. Rochester Branch – organiser
“An excellent lecture illustrated by dissolving views, was given to the members of Band of Hope, on Wednseday, 20th October, by Mr. Glasspool. The subject was 'Our Four-footed and Feathered Friends.' The audience, consisting both of children and many of their elders, were much instructed by the picture of animal life; each picture been accompanied by a short natural history of the subject, coupled with an anecdote or two. The views of this lecture are certainly some of the best belonging to the United Kingdom Band of Hope Union. During the lecture a pleasant little break took place, by reason of the children wishing to make Rev. H. Witherby a present in the form of a walnut-wood pen and pencil stand with plated ends. The presentation was made by Mr. Creagh, junior, on behalf of the children as a token of their appreciation of the efforts of Mr. Witherby to instruct them, and of his earnest labours in carrying on the work of their Band of Hope. Mr. Witherby said he was thoroughly taken by surprise, and that they had kept a secret well, for not a word had he heard of this useful and elegant present. He thanked hem very warmly for it, and said he would reserve any more he had to say to them until the next Band of Hope meetng. After a ew more miscellaneous slides, the Evening Hymn was thrown on the sheet, and being sung, the meeting, a good one considering the snowy weather, terminated.”
