“An attempt, happily a very successful one, was made here at Christmas to counteract the attractions of the public-houses. On Christmas-eve, invitations were given to coffee etc., to all who might be likely to spend their evenings in the public house. About forty-two, including those who came to help and many of those who were 'wanted', spent a quiet and sober evening together. On Boxing-night, again from 6 pm to midnight. the same experiment was repeated, with the addition of an excellent magic lantern. About 120 were present. many of whom were brought in from the public-houses in the neighborhood by the kind of exertions of some working men, who had helped to provide tea and entertainment. The admission was quite free, a subscription having been raised to defray expenses. The hours of the evening were passed, in addition to the lantern mentioned, with songs and recitations, among which we must mention the reciting of 'Buy your own cherries' by Mr. Cavard, a police-constable from Norwood, who is a Total Abstainer. About midnight, Rev. F.H.Potter and Rev. H. Witherley each delivered short adresses, and the company separated, after singing the National Anthem. So successful have these two evenings been, that it is felt it would be wrong to drop the crusade against Intemperance thus begun, and it has, therefore, been determined to carry on this work every Saturday evening at present - an evening of special temptation- from 8-12 o'clock. Before long, it is hoped, a 'British Workman' public-house will be raised. On a reent Saturday, again, upwards of eighthy were present, passing the time in taking coffee and listening to songs, and the music of an etemprized band from the Streatham Insatitute, which has been a great help to the success of these gatherings. (..) The movement has taught those who started it that working maen only want a place to counteract the attractions of the public-house and beer-shop, and they will fill it to overflowing. It is ot the beer only which they want, it is the company also.”
