RAMSAY, W.M. (fl. 1890s) – lecturer
Queen Street Free Church Band of Hope, Edinburgh – organiser
“A Band of Hope Demonstration - The first of what is hoped will be a series of United Band of Hope Demonstrations was held in Queen-street Free Church, Edinburgh, on the evening of March 2nd. The church was crowded, many being unable to gain admission. The chair was occupied by Rev. Rev. Cunningham, and the Rev. Dr. Whyte, of Free St. George's Church, gave a short address. He said that one of the first temperance advocates in this country was Dr. Samuel Johnson, who wrote his greatest work after he had passed the allotted span, and who often remarked that it was due to his temperate habits that he was so hale and hearty at an age when most men's working days were done. Following this address, a lecture, illustrated by lime-light views, on 'Strong drink: how it is made, and what it makes,' was delivered by Mr. W. M. Ramsay.”
