CHAMBERS, Adam (fl. 1880s) – lecturer
“Thornton Heath. - Beulah Baptist Chapel. - On Tuesday evening, April 10th, a panoramic lecture was given to the Sunday School scholars, teachers, and friends, by Mr. Adam Chambers, of New York, entitled 'From the City of Destruction to the Celestial Gate,' taken from John Bunyan's immortal Dream. The paintings are in oil, the figures being three-quarters of life-size, designed and painted by the lecturer personally, and exhibit much artistic power, the effect of light and shade in some being very realistic, and, when explained by the fine descriptive and eloquent powers of Mr. Chambers, the persons therin pourtrayed appear to stand out as real and living characters. Some of the pictures, especially the falling off of the burden at the Cross, and the sudden appearance of the angels, was very impressive; 'the fight with Apollyon,' and 'the lions in the way,' exceeding exciting; but the closing scenes, including the never-to-be-forgotten scene of 'Ignorance carried away,' were grand and inspiring, and left deep impressions upon the audience.”
