CARRUTHERS, Alfred G. (1857-1928) – lecturer
CARRUTHERS, Thomas (c.1848- after 1901) – lantern operator
“Wootton - Mr. Alfred G. Carruthers, hon. visitor of the Bedford Sunday School Union, delivered his interesting lecture, 'The Pilgrim's Progress,' in the Baptist Chapel on Wednesday evening week. The large and appreciative audience quite filled the chapel, including the seats placed in the aisles. Mr. Frank Lee, of Bedford, presided. The dissolving views used to illustrate the lecture, and exhibited by Mr. Thos. Carruthers, were of high order. A collection was made in aid of the chapel fund, and at the close, on the motion of the Rev. J. Readman, pastor, seconded by Mr. Pope, superintendent of the Sunday School, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and Messrs. Carruthers. The lecturer, in a brief reply, stated that he had now delivered this lecture to audiences numbering, in the aggregate, over twenty thousand persons, a testimony to the interest in Bunyan and his wonderful work.”
