“Senior Scholars' Entertainment, 56 Old Bailey, London - The concluding meeting for the year was held on Tuesday evening, when Mr. H. G. Gilbert gave an interesting lecture on 'China and the Chinese.' In a pleasing and chatty style the lecturer gave particulars of Hong Kong, Amoy, Canton, Nankin, and other places in the Celestial Empire, and described the manners and customs of the people. Among other things referred to were the rice fields and tea plantations, kite flying, conjuring, fortune telling, wedding and funeral ceremonies, modes of locomotion and punishment, silk dyeing and winding, itinerant pedlars and barbers, opium smoking, &c. The concluding part of the lecture dealt with religion and the temple servies. The lecture was illustrated with the Sunday School Union dissolving views, and seemed to be much appreciated. Mr. Brain, who presided, having made some remarks appropriate to the close of the year, the proceedings were closed, as they began with prayer.”
