“(Anfangs des Artikels fehlt) … their annual soirée at Holy Trinity School, Hartland-road, Kentish Town. Upwards of 200 ladies and gentlemen were present. The large school-room in which the conversazione took place was laid out with tables containing scientific instruments, works of art, curiosities, and objects of interest. Among these were the microphone and telephone in full operation, electric motor and machines, illustrations of the art of paper making, the 'compass by which the screw was discovered,' a large mother-o'-pearl shell, carved with portraits of the Apostles and scenes of Christ's life, a picture of the Last Supper in wax, microscopes, graphoscopes, photographs, & c. The electric light was used for the illumination of the room, 16 Gatehouse incandescent lamps, each 25-candle-power, being in operation. These lamps are about the size of a tumbler, and were hung in groups of three. A platinum spiral and carbon filament forms the internal mechanism, the former being an arrangement which preserves the life of the lamp. These lamps were worked by Woodley-Joel accumulators, 50 celles being in a waggon outside in the street. Dissolving views were shown during the evening, the Rev. Alfred Scott giving the explanatory lecture. A concert was extended by instalments through the evening, Miss Edith Cutts, Mr. and Mrs. N. Neame, Mrs. G. A. Smith, Miss F. Lee, Miss E. Stalman, Mrs. A. R. Scott, and Mr. Calkin participating in the programme. Short addresses of congratulation were delivered by the Rev. Dr. Cutts and Mr. John Palmer, secretary of the Church of England Sunday School Institute. The evening closed with the National Anthem.”
