CARRUTHERS, Alfred G. (1857-1928) – lecturer
“Bedford - Bunyan Rooms - On Thursday, Feb. 9th, a lecture on 'Scotland; her Sons and her Scenery,' was delivered by Mr. Alfred. G. Carruthers, visitor of the Bedford Sunday School Union. The chair was taken by the Rev. J. Brown, B.A., and there was a large attendance. The lecture was illustrated by more than sixty beautiful dissolving views, which had been hired from the Sunday School Union, Old Bailey. In the course of the lecture, the Scotch song, 'Weel may the keel row,' was sung by the Misses Heath and Warton, Mr. T. W. Peer, and Mr. D. Ashby, the latter presiding at the harmonium. At the close a hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer was proposed by the Rev. T. Watts, seconded by Mr. F. G. Cockburn. The lecture was also delivered at Sandy on Thursday, Jan. 26, Mr. G. A. Grigg presiding; at Ridgmount on Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Rev. W. J. Tomkins in the chair, and at Biggleswade on Monday, Feb. 6.”
