“New Year's Soiree - A most successful Soiree was held on Tuesday, Jan. 29th, in the New Cross Hall. The Rev. H. G. Cundy, D. D. in the Chair. Mr. G. R. Tweedie, F. C. S., gave a very interesting lecture, 'Are Intoxicating drinks food?' numerously illustrated. This was followed by an address by the Rev. I. Morley Wright, then Mr. C. Wakely delivered a lecture on 'Incidents of Peril and Heroism', illustrated by a splendind dissolving views.The lads from the Rev. C. H. Spurgeon's Stockwell Orphanage, gave a selection of pieces during the evening on their sweet-toned Hand Bells. A Ventriloquial Entertainment introducing the Cabinet of Oddities, by Mr. Thomas Lenton brought the Meeting to a close.”
