WAKELY, Charles (1849-1926) – lecturer
Lewisham High Road Band of Hope – organiser
“Lewisham High Road Band of Hope - On Wednesday, Oct. 19th, a very interesting lecture was given in connection with this Society by Mr. Charles Wakely, of United Kingdom Band of Hope Union, in the Lecture Hall of Lewisham Road Congregational Church. The lecture, the title of which was 'Incidents of Peril and Heroism' was illustrated by the very highclass views supply by the Band of Hope Union. At the close of the lecture, Mr. J. P. Riddle, the President of the Society addressed the meeting upon the advantages of temperance. He stated that the society, which started six months ago with only 30 members, had now received more than 150 signatures to the temperance pledges, and urged those who had taken up this work to be true to their colors, and to press onward till their cause was crowned by victory. Mr. J. Mitchell then read a very beautiful and pathetic poem, 'A story of angels' showing that no good action, however small, fails to achieve some results and gain some reward. Mr. Harry Harnsworth expressed the thanks of the Society, and of those present to Mr. Wakely for his lecture.”
