“A Peep at China - On Monday evening, Nov. 8. An entertainment was given in the Lecture Hall of the Baptist Chapel, Lewsiham-road, entitled a 'Peep at China', by Rev. W. J.Holder, who exhibited excellent panorama in which were delineated tracts of country, cities, joss-houses, and specimens of the manners and customs of the Chinese. The pictures comprised 'The Island of Fragrant Streams'; The Kwant-tung, on the Pearl River, The City of Pekin with the Temple of Thwain-hau, Street in Victoria, Hong-kong, a Buddhist Priest at his devotions; Chinese wedding and funeral processions; soldiers and mandarin; the opium smoker's den; the tea plant; portrait of a man with four eyes; besides a lantern, fan, coins, shoes, Chinese New Testament; and other curiosities. The chair was taken at eight o'clock by Mr. G. S. Wybroo, and as in addtion to the features of interest above mentioned, aselection of Pieces of the Crystal Palace Concert was perfomed during the evening under the conductorship of Mr. Munn, the audience were provided with an excellent entertainment.”
