“O Ye Ice and Snow, Bless Ye the Lord - The Manchester II. Van has been keeping up the honour of its colours in its battle with the devil at Blackley. It took up it quartersat Botthomly Field, and Capt. Heywood, Cadet Heslam and the Rev. J. J. Wilson were not long in planning out a campaign. St. Peter's schoolroom was placed at the Officer's disposal, but they attacked in the open-air in the first place. Blackley had never had seen such a couple before. The cornet sounded the Reveille and Blackley rubbed its eyes. The Officers had a stiff time, for frost and ice had invaded them, but their hearts were warm with the love of God. When the cornet had sounded a night or two, the great gun of the Lantern was put into position, and the enemy's wall of indifference began to tumble. Gazettes began to sell like ripe cherries, and the Officers had a good time both in body and soul. Then came the Children's Mission, conducted by the Rev. J. J. Wilson, the youngsters sucked in the truths of the Gospel with avidity. At daily prayer the work was commended to the great Captain of our Salvation and his help sought, so that Blackley was fairly alive when the Missioners arrived. Services were held in Lion Mills, Howorth's Wallpaper Factory, Lazonby's Works, and Crumpsall Vale. Each night the Rev. J. J. Wilson, in cassock and surplice, accompanied by the Captain and the Cadet, went out into the streets. Sometimes the cornet of the Captain froze in the cold, sometimes Mr. Wilsons's surplice was wet with rain. The Cadet manipulated the lantern in the open-air, and large crowds came to see pictures of our blessed Lord's Passion. As the Army Van had fought the preliminary campaigns, so it fought the rear-action when the Missioners had gone. Capt. Prior joined for one or two battles. The Lecture on the Church Army by Capt. Heywood were well attended, and the chairman was most cordial in his appreciation of the work. ”
