GLEGG, Captain W. (fl. 1900s-10s) – lecturer
Church Army Hereford II Van – organiser
“To Heaven by the Bye Street. - A successful Three-weeks' Mission was recently held in the parish of Ledbury by Capt. W. Clegg and Cadet J. Weeder, in charge of the Hereford II. Van. The meetings were held in a large tent erected upon an unused piece of land in Bye Street, kindly lent for that purpose, and in spite of the cold and wet weather, they were very well attended. Several Lantern Lectures were given by the Captain, which were thoroughly enjoyed. Two Services were held each Sunday, at 3 p.m., and another (a Lantern Service) at 7 p.m. Two or three services for children were held, and were also very well attended. The poorest parts of the Parish were visited, and Open-Air Meetings were held. The Rector of Ledbury kindly assisted both in the tent and at the Open-air Meetings. The Rector and Capt. Clegg gave most earnest and helpful addresses. Many books and text-cards were sold among the people. At the Farewell Service many came forward for Memorial Cards in token of blessings received during the Mission. The spirit of the Mission has not died out. The Rector has rented a room for carrying on these meetings, which are held after the Church Service every Sunday evening, and are very well attended. Another important result of the Mission is seen in the fact, that we now have an agency in Ledbury for The C.A. Gazette, and already a fair number of people take this exceedingly interesting paper. It is hoped that the number will consideratley increase as time goes on. We are lookin forward with pleasure to the return visit of the Van, which will be next February, when it will stay with us, about ten days. May God bless all the efforts made on behalf of this glorious work. By. A Ledburian.”
