HICKS, Canon Edward (c.1844- ? ) – lecturer
“An Open-Air Campaign. - The members of this Mission at St. Philip's Salford, have had a glorious time. A big number assembled in the Church on the Tuesday in Holy Week to hear the Rev. John Willis (of St. Michael's, Hulme) give a breezy address. Then on Good Friday we had a splendid army of workers for the Open-Air Campaign; several centres were visited, and a cordial invitation to the Lantern Service in Church was given to all by our energetic Captain Rowlands, who ably led us with his well-known and well-used concertina. Then we had a fine number of people in Church to listen to Canon Hicks expound the Story of the Cross, assisted by a number of beautiful coloured slides. It was our first Lantern Service in Church, and all felt it was both hearty and reverent. Easter Sunday was a happy day for us all, and the numbers of devout communications very encouraging. Then on Bank Holiday we had our Easter Tea and Entertainment, which we all highly enjoyed, entertained as we were by the Captain's friends from Miles Platting. The most pleasing feature, perhaps, was the happy spirit of fellowship which pervaded throughout-real brotherhood and sisterhood; a pleasing foretaste even now of that fuller life which we expect. E. B. H.”
