“Henley-On-Thames.-Since the advent of our new Captain, large congregations have attended the meetings. A series of four lectures has just been given on both parishes in which the officer labours, the subject being 'The Church Army,' and 'what is it?' In the first lecture the Captain gave an account of the early days of he Church Army, and how it was begun in the Kensington Vestry Hall by the Rev. W. Carlile and how Mr. Ed. Clifford, Miss Cheshire and others came forward to help him.he also described the work up to the present time, with an account of the training and commission of Evangelists at the Training Home, preparing for the field. The second week's lecture was on the Mission-Nurses' work, and Nurse Johnson, of Remenham, also spoke on all the departments of Nurses' work, which was very interesting to all who came to hear. The third week was on the Labour Homes, when two addresses were given by the Captain, on the C.A. Social Scheme, the one in th morning at Church, an the other in the evening at the Mission Room. The fourth and last lecture was illustrated by magic lantern sides, sent down by Miss Cheshire. Many thanks are due to her for the careful selection of slides sent. The lantern is a new one, given by the Baroness Von Brandt, of Rosehill House, and is to be used for the benefit of the Mission. The collections which were taken at each lecture on behalf of the School and Mission Room,were filled each time. The lantern on each occasion was nicely managed by Mr. R. J. Ayres, who has also given a great amount of his time to the singing part of our mission. About £3 worth of books, texts, crests, etc. have been sold during the lectures, the profits of which will also go to the local funds. While the lantern was in use, some comic sketches were given to about 130 of the children living in the parish, which amused them very much. We had a visit from Mr. Edward Clifford on Sunday.
