“Salehurst, Sussex, St. Mary the Virgin.-On Sunday last, we had a happy time. A good audience; singing, bright and hearty; our good organist helping with rousing music. Misses Hoad and Whiteman kindly gave us, 'Jesus knows thy sorrow.' The Captain gave an earnest pointed address from the subject, 'Striking for better Wages;' leaving the beggarly elements of the world to work for a better master. On Wednesday, Oct. 25, we had a C.A. Organ Recital in the Church by Mr. Herbert H. Putland (Organist of Mountfield). Mrs. Putland sweetly sang four solos. Rev. Alex. D.C. Clarke, C.A.D.O.S. for Chichester, spoke during the interval on the 'History of the Church Army.' Total collected, £1 16s. 2½d.; 200 people being present. We closed with the 'Hallelujah Chorus.' Each one leaving the Church received one of our Silent Messengers (C.A. GAZETTE). In the evening, Rev. Alex. D.C. Clarke, M.A., gave a Lecture on 'C.A. Evangelistic and Social Work,' illustrated by 9-ft. pictures, shown by powerful oxy-hydrogen limelight lantern. Our Captain presided at the organ and 5s. 6d. for the Tramps' Fund was collected. We close the week of work with Lantern Lecture in 'Pilgrim's Progress,' to be delivered by our Captain. Pray for us. Edward F. Hankins, Capt.”
