“'No Mere Show': On Monday the Salisbury No. II C.A. Van arrived in this parish, to hold a fortnight's mission under the charge of Capt. F. Coleman and Bro. Simpson. The first week was spent at Milton, and the Mission opened with a Gospel service in the little Sunday school room, which was crowded to its upmost capacity and the other services had to be conducted in the church. These consisted for the most part of lantern services, bearing on the birth, life and passion of our Saviour (...) It is stated by some people that the use of the magic lantern at the services savours too much of a show, and is used as a bait to entice people; if it suceeds in doing the latter, it is fulfilling just what we want, for the more who come to hear the old Gospel story the more successful is the mission; while no one who has once listened to the adresses or seen the pictures, which are taken from some of the best artists, can ever really think that they are exhibited for the sake of giving mere pleasure, the main object of the missioner being to arouse the attention of those who have got slack in their religious duties, and to impress them with the seriousness of what the Saviour has done for them.”
