“'An Old Friend With a New Face': The old friend referred to in the title is the Church Army Van. Four years ago, in the early part of 1898, Capt. J. W. Wood of the Worcester Van I, visited this parish and held several lantern mission services in the school-room; they were very much appreciated and very well attended, and have not been forgotten. Last month a Church Army Van came to us again. The 'new face' referred to is C.A. Van Peterborough II Capt. F. J. King, who was in charge of the Van, and his two cadets, Brothers Crump and Carey, held a fortnight's services in the parish. The meetings were generally well attended, and especially so on Sunday evenings when the schoolroom was packed. The beautiful slides thrown upon the sheet were a great source of attraction and enjoyment, while the devout and earnest manner of the missioners, and the straightforward and heart-searching adresses given could not fail to impress those present and strike home to many a heart. Kindly assisted, both in the Sunday School and the Band of Hope, was also rendered by the evangelists. A most impressive item was the lantern service held in the church on Good Friday evening. The whole of the services (excepting the lessons and sermons) were thrown upon the sheet, the slides illustrating the hymns of the Passion. While the congregation knelt, the choir sang the ever lovely 'Story of the Cross' which with its touching words and pictures, was also thrown on the sheet. Surely the effect must have been to make one realize, perhaps more than one is want to do, the reality of that which we commemorate on Good Friday.(...)”
