“'Refreshment by the way.' Carleton. - The Ripon Van II., after a month's stay with us, during which time we hope much good has been done, left herre for Settle. The evangelists, Capt. Chance and Cadet W. Griffith, gave their farewell service on Sunday evening in the new schoolroom, to a large congregation, the captain giving a stirring address on the 'Good Fight.' The vicar, Rev. T.C.Barker, also spoke some earnest words. To mark the appreciation of this visit of the Van, a tea andd social were organised for Saturday, which proved a great success, over 150 partaking of an excellent tea, all the provisions etc. for which had been most willingly given. The captain and his assistant were present by special invitation, a miscellaneous series of lantern views being shown by the captain and much appreciated. Songs and glees were given by an improvised glee party, accompanied by the Carleton String BAnd, who kindly gave their services. The Proceeds which amounted to over £8 less some small expenses, ahve been forwarded to Capt. Chance, for transmission to Headquaters. A Friend, for Capt. Chance.”
