TAYLOR, Captain (fl. 1890s-1900s) – lecturer
Church Army St Albans Van – organiser
“'Cart-Horses and Lantern Slides.' Ingrave Essex. - We have just had a most interesting and successful mission, conducted by the captain and brothers belonging to the St. Albans Van.. A month ago we had scarcely heard of the Church Army, and had never thought we should have the priviledge of attending a mission here. However Capt. Taylor arrived on Wednesday evening and suggested holding a mission the very next week, which was very short notice, but did not matter as we at once set to work to distribute notices about it, and the news soon spread. The attendance was only fair the first night, but increased every night when the weather was fine. The services were most reverent and devout, and on all sides the greatest appreciation was expressed. The earnest and heartfelt addresses given must have made a deep impression on many hearers, and we cannot but feel that if there is no lasting result from the mission it will be only our own fault. It was with great regret that we wished Bother Edwards 'good-bye,' on his being called to join the Chichester Van, some days before the St.Alans Van left us, and when we parted from Capt. Taylor and Brother Wollen later on, we felt extremely sorry, both that they were going, and that the mission was over. At the end of the mission two young men belonging to the village, spent one evening collecting subscriptions to pay for the hire of the horses which took the Van to the next place, and they succeeded so well that there was enough money over, after this was paid, to buy a set of lantern slides, which Capt. Taylor said the Van ought to possess, adding that they would be a memento of the mission at INgrave. B.E.H.H., for CApt. Taylor”
