“'Bright and cheery.' Ampfield, Romsey. - The Winchester No. III.C.A. Van has just left this parish. Capt. Ridler and his lieutenant, Mr. Day, have given us all every satisfaction. Meetings have been held either with or without the lantern during the week, and on Sundays after evensong. They also held an open-air service in the afternoon instead of the regular Church service, which I omitted for the purpose. In every case, except the first night, when (through no fault of their's or mine) their advent had not become generally known, the meetings have been well, and in the majority of cases excellently attended- Capt. Ridler's addresses were thoroughly wholesome, sound, and 'Church,' and the attention never flagged, though there was no sign of 'rating'. In addition to these services, three special lantern services for children were given immediately previous to the adult meetings, and the attendance of childern was good, and the services most reverently and simply conducted. Mr. Day also addressed my Sunday School children on the Sunday mornings, and I can only speak of his addresses as excellent, thoughtful, and sugestive. [...]”
