“'A Preacher from Prison.' Ashton-on-Mersey, St. Maty Magdalene's Mission. - This room was beautifully decorated by the members and friends for the harvest festival, who contributed largely; the people appreciated the festival by coming eagerly to hear the gospel hymns sung by Sunday school. Capt. Hanson, the Prison Missioner, impressively addressed two crowded congregations, on 'The personality of friendship of Jesus.' He earnestly appealed that all present would be ready when Jesus came to gather the spiritual sheaves into the Heavenly garner. Monday, limelight lantern lecture on 'Preaching in Prisons, poorhouses and poor parishes.' The vicar, the Rev. Dr. Atkinson, being called away, the meeting was opened by the curate. Capt. Hanson most ably showed how wisely the good old Church cared for the fallen, and sought earnestly to reform if the people desired to make a fresh start in life. The good done was indescribable. God produced a great impression on the large assembly. The lantern was willingly lent and ably managed by our good friend, Mr. Crosby, who hopes to give another exhibition soon. A Friend, for Capt. Simpkin.”
