“'Catching them on the Hop.' Lindridge, St. Lawrence. - A happy mission of six weeks among the hop-pickers has just come to a close. Services have been held each night among the pickers, the lantern being used every night. Generally the sheet was fastened on the side of the barns or sheds, and the lantern stood on an empty barrel or old chair. The children soon gathered round, and their shouts, together with the concertina soon made known to the older people that service was ready to begin. There were generally from fifty to a hundred men and women, besides the children, and all joined heartily in the singing, the favourite hymns being 'All hail the power of Jesu's name!' and 'There is a fountain!' Services were continued for an hour, many times in complete silence, after which the people dispersed to barns and other places to sleep, after once more hearing the 'Old, old story of Jesus and His Love.' The 200 pickers were divided into eight different lots at different farms, each farm being visited in turn. Some happy hours were also spent in the hop-field during the day, picking a few hops, and dropping here and there the seed for the Master. The Services seemed to be much appreciated by the people, who generally said, 'When will you came again, mister?' and 'Come again soon.' Teas were also provided for the lads from the different farms weekly by the vicar, the Rev. H. Clifford. They afterwards had a lantern service. Though no results have been seen, we trust and pray to the seed sown has fallen on good ground, and will bear fruit to the Master's glory, to Whom be all the praise. H. Clifford (Vivar), for Capt.
