BELL, Captain (fl. 1890s) – lecturer
Church Army Salisbury I Van – organiser
“'Growing down and growing up.' Holt, Wilts. - We shall not soon forget the visit to our village of the Salisbury Diocesan Church Amry Van I., under the charge of Capt. Bell. The bright open-air services held night by night in different parts of the parish; the number who gathered on Sundays round the Van, or on the green, or under the shade of the trees, to listen to the simple, manly words of the captain and the brothers, and join in the mission hymns; the men's service in the Parish Church, when 'Stand up, stand up for Jesus,' was so heartly sung; the Sunday evening addresses; and, last but not least, the lantern services, when the schoolroom was full to overflowing, and yet 'you could have heard a pin drop.' There is much we might say about the earnest prayers for the parish, the bright hearty singing, the faithful, loving words of warning and encouragment, and the sacred solos, sug as if they meant it, but we will speak of only one beautiful picture of our Redeemer in Gethsemane, and the quiet singing of the pleading refrain, 'For you I am praying, I am praying for you.' We believe that good seed has been sown among us, which will 'take root downward and bear fruit upward.' H.M.S., for Capt. Bell.”
