“'Fruit for Christ.' Cudham, Kent. - Far away from the busy hum of the city life, up among the sunny hills of Kent, may be ssen from June to September of each year, hundreds of people engeged in picking fruit, etc. These are assembled from all parts of the country, some being regular gypsies with thier caravan, while others are from different parts of London. Among some five hundreds of these, at Cudham, CAapt. Waddle, C.A., has been engaged for some five weeks in the Master's work. The pickers live in tents, huts, vans, and in large encampments, which means that all work must be done in the open air. The work lies in visiting the mission and lantern services at night. Sunday being rest day, that is the chief day for the missioner, as he gets ebtter chances for personal dealing, and also of getting all the people together. The vicar of the parish (Rev. H.A. Curtis) was most kind, and rendered valuable aid in speaking at the lantern services, as well as in acrrying lantern over fields and through woods to the camps. Being the first year of the mission work at Cudham, it was strange to vicar, farmers, and pickers alike, but the farmers gave Capt. Waddle a hearty welcome, as did also the pickers, and some real good times were the result. Of course we had not all our own way, as drink coused some tongues to wad too freely, and at times the meetings were distributed a little, but on the whole the attention was very good. The pickers showed their appreciation of the services by asking the missioner at the close of the mission to come again next year. Surely some good must result from these labours for God, and we pray that souls may have been won for Him. H.”
