“'The Greatest Cop.' - Parkfield, Middelton, Holy Trinity. - Capt. Rowland (the pioneer missioner) held a fourteen days' mission in this parish, which. To the sorrow and regret of many - closed on Sunday the 19th. House-to-house visiting was most faithfully done, a tract being laft at each house. The services on the whole were well attended. Lantern services were held, which were much appreciated and helpful to many. On Sunday afternoon an open-air was held on the spot of ground where the Van stood. Eleven sisters and two brothers stood, and the captain spoke for three-quaters-of-an-hour to at least fifty men and twenty women. After he closed he gave each of the men an invitation and a tract. One of the men was rather inclined to argue, but the captain said, 'My brother, I don't want to argue, but you have had the truth, and you can either accept it or reject it.' So he said it was an insult to stand outside a beer.house; the captain said, 'Where does the bird-catcher go when he wants to catch bird?' The man said, 'To where he gets 'the greatest cop.' 'So I have come here - I knew there were a lot of birds about here just at 2.30 - hoping that I shall be able, by God's grace, to cop some.' The other men laughed, and seemed to quite enjoy it. It was plainly seen there were more in favour of the C.A: than against. AT night the room was well filled, and an earnest address prayed for; many others have made fresh resolutions, and have received a blessing. We wish Capt. Rowlands God's blessing wherever he may g, hoping he will be able tompay us a visit soon again. T.R., for Capt. Rowland.”
