“'The Lantern in Church.' The following letter appears in the 'Church in the West,' on the 21st of January: - 'Sir, - Will you allow me, through the 'Church in the West,' to commend to the Clergy of the Archdeaconry of Bodmin our Church Army Van and ist Captain. During ten of the thirteen days the Van has been in this parish, the weather has been most wet and stormy, but Capt. Uphill has visited the Parishioners by day, and at night has held meetings in the Schoolroom, or has given addresses in the church after evensong. Last Sunday evening his subject was the 'Life of Christ,' illustrated by lantern scenes, from Dore and other pictures. The church where I rather reluctantly allowed the lantern scene to be exhibited, in spite of the rough, wet night, was crowded with elderly, as well as young, people, all of whom in touch with the lecturer, behaved with the greatest reverence. Except the light from the lantern, the church, for 75 minutes, was in total darkness, but not a sound was heard, save the Captain's earnest words. At the end of his address, and at his invitation, the whole congregation knelt and sang, 'When I survey the wondrous Cross.' I am quite sure that none of my brethen who admit Capt. Uphill to their parishes, and give him the right hand of fellowship, will have cause to regret doing so. His geutle, pleasing manner, powerful voice, and good presence, make his honest, outspoken denunciation of unreality in religion, and his plain teaching of Church Doctrine accepted by some by whom it would otherwise be received with a deaf ear. In thus indirectly proving Church Doctrine to be Bible Truth, Capt. Uphill is most successfully aiding us priests of God's Church in the work we have to do. (Canon) Paul Bush. Duloe Rectory.”
