GADDUM, Alfred (1872-1954) – lecturer
“'South Africa in Manchester': Christmastide at the above Home has been a great success. On Christmas Day wore quite a seasonable and artistic aspect. Through the generosity of Alfred Gaddum, Esq., and R.H. Joynson, Esq. Hon. Treasurer, excellent Christmas fare was supplied, including the inevitable Christmas pudding. The ample justice done to these by the brothers left no doubt that they were thouroughly appreciated. Following dinner, songs with accompaniments on a piano kindly lent by the Rev. - Ellison, and recitations, etc. were indulged in. To the entertainment of the brothers the Misses Bethell largly contributed; the one by her recitations, and the other by her various songs. During the afternoon and evening Miss Gaddum played several selections on the piano. After tea, Mr. Gaddum gave a magic lantern display accompanied by selections from a gramophone. Most of the scenes being pictures of South African cities, mining life, etc. they were greatly appreciated. (...)”
