LARNER, Captain E.N. (fl. 1890s) – lecturer
“'Our Pioneers at Work.' Stoke Newington, St. Matthias'. - We have had this Advent, in addition to other efforts, the advantage of the earnest labours of several members of the Church Army, under the leadership of Captain Larner. There can be no question as to the intense earnestness of all who are engaged in this movement to reach multitude. The burning zeal of the little band of workers who came down all weathers from Edgware Road, puts us all to shame. Whould that some of us caught the fire such an enthousiasm as theirs. They had only one obect in view, viz., that of rousing up sinners to see their peril, and then their safety in Christ. The all-powerful subject of the Passion was their one theme, and concentrating their engergies on this, they could speak with a directness and force, which others who have objects in view, fail to acquire. Capt. Larner's report is as follows: - 'As you know, we began our work with few helpers, but, thank God, they have increased; and although the dear Church people have been somewhat apathetic, I think out the whole we have seen much to be encouraged with. The men's meetings in church have not been altogether a failure. There were more last Sunday evening than had been hitherto (2). The week-day evening services have been encouraging. The numbers attending have been on the increase. Several have raised their hands for prayer. The Open-air Sevices have been a marked success. Numbers have been attracted by the singing of hymns and earnest appeals made in the streets, and we are trusting will bring forth much fruit to God's honour and glory. one night espacially, when we had the band with us, there were a great number attracted. As we went past the theatre, one young lady came and sought me privately to know more about God, and numbers thanked me personally for services rendered, which had been instrumental in blessing their souls. The visiting should not be omitted. We were well received in the parish, and many promised to come, who never turned up. The parish is overwhelmed with stolid indifference to spiritual matters. The Lantern Services have been most attractive, and have drawn large crowds.' Nurse Colson, the Pioneer Mission Nurse reports that during the Mission, the women's work was as follows: - 'Addresses to Mother's Meeting. Three Women's Meetings on Thursdays duering the Mission. Cottage Meeting at 40, Barnett's Grove - twelfe present. Help in outdoor and indoor meetings, istributing bills &c. House to house visiting in Watson Street, Philip Street, Thomas' Place, Spencer Road, Shakespeare Road, Barrett's Grove, &c.' - Parish Magazine.”
