The life of Christ (generic set title – 18 different versions are known)
Strike while the iron's hot (story: Bamforth & Co., 26 slides, 1896)
KING, Captain (fl. 1890s-1900s) – lecturer
KING, Captain R.L. (fl. 1890s) – lantern operator
“'A Sermon on a Wall.' 'Come along, Captain, you are tiring our patience.' So spake one of the bystanders in our Cotteridge Road the other Monday night, as our Captain - accompanied by Capt. R.L.King, from St.Mary's Whitall Street, Birmingham - approached the crowd. There were upwards of 150 people anxiously waiting to see the wonderful acetylene light which Capt. King had brought to illustrate - through the lantern - the story 'Strike while the iron's hot.' It was rather a novelty to see pictures, almost life-size, thrown on a wall in the road; but we trust that great results for good will follow, and that, as one expressed it, 'the Service did not end when the crowd dispersed.' During the singing of the hymns, pictures from the l'Life of Christ' were thrown on a sheet, and after the story was told, other scenes such as 'The Crown of Thornes,' 'The Cruxifixion,' etc., were shown, and Capt. King gave a very telling Address. Our best thanks are due to all, who ( in a way) rendered help to make it a success. On the following Wendnesday the Lantern was again exhibited in the home of Mr. S. May (West heath), to a very attentive gathering. Capt. F. Chamberlain.”
