MORRIS, Captain (fl. 1890s-1900s) – lecturer
Church Army St Asaph Van – organiser
“WITH A WELSH VAN Bronington, Whitchurch, Shropshire. - Capt. Morris and Lieut. Coleman, in charge of the St. Asaph Van, arrived here from Overton. The weather being unfavourable, Open-air Services were not held, and the programme had to be altered after the Evangelists had arrived. Daily Matins and Evensong were said in church, and lectures and sermons were delivered both in the school and church; many of these were illustrated by lantern views. The Missioners also paid visits to many houses, and it is simply impossible to say in what a great degree good has been done. Every one seems to have come under the Missioners' influence, and large congregations have assembled night after night, many people, both women and men, walking miles through darkness and rain. A special Lantern Lecture was held at the Peat Moss Litter Works, which is situated on the borders of two parishes and two dioceses - three miles from a church, and far from any Christian agency. Though only a shed, with bales of moss litter for seats, a great number assembled, listening, as if bound by a spell to the old, old story. On Sunday evening the Vicar explained the various events of the Trial, Crucifixion and Resurrections of our Saviour, in church, and Capt. Morris manipulated the lantern. On another occasion the subject was 'The Shadow of the Cross,' which was a most solemn service. It was unfortunate the Evangelists were timed to leave at the end of a fortnight, for the Mission was then most powerful for good. [...] The Vicar.”
