“WHY NOT IN CHURCH? Colebrooke. - The Officers in charge of the 'Exeter II' Van have been holding a Mission in my parish for the past fortnight, and have conducted Open-air Services at the Van in the hamlets of Coleford and Copplestone, which have been greatly appreciated; that at Coleford being largely attended. They have also had Lantern Servies in the Schoolroom, which were most impressively conducted, and were listend to with breathless attention. I would venture to offer the suggestion that these Services should be conducted in church, as the solemnity of the building would add untold weight to the realism of the Service. Relegating the Evangelists to the Board School, is, I think, hardly in accordance with the main idea of the Church Army of utilizing the enthusiasm of Churchmen, since any dissenter can have the same privilege, and the Evangelists are solemnly admitted to the order (a minor order) by the Bishop of London, and therefore have a claim which no mere layman could have to speak in church. Laymen read the lessons in church, a layman sings the Litany in the Cathedral, why then should not the Evangelists, who are something more than laymen, not speak in church at a special service. I. Daimpre (Vicar).”
