“CHRIST AMONG THE SOLDIERS AT ROSS Ross. - There is a good work being done amongst the soldiers encamped here which, we hope, will bear fruit in their future life, causing them to realise the joy of living in Christ's presence in this life and throughout Eternity. The soldiers are visited daily in their tens by Capt. Ridyard, who in this way is able to know them individually, and give them his sympathy, counsel and advice. He takes a plentiful supply of good literature with him, which the men thouroughly appreciate, and thereby many of friends are made. The Mission Tent was thrown open every evening at 5o'clock, for letter-writing and games. Paper and envelopes are given to the soldiers, and a post office is opened for the sale of stamps and postal orders. To give an idea of the amount of letter-writing done, we found that in one evening as many as 250 letters had been wriiten. Our object in doint his is to prevail upon the men to send money home to their wives and parents, which otherwise would probaly be spent in drink. At 8.30 we begin singing hymns from C. A. hymn book the soldiers generally choosing their particular favourites after which an Address is given, and Scriptures read closing with prayer. The average attendance has been 100to 150. On July 1 a Lantern Service was given, with which the men were delighted, and there is every reason to believe that many hearts were touched. (...) A. W. U., for Capt. Ridyard.”
