WOOD, Captain J.W. (fl. 1890s) – lecturer
Church Army Worcester Van – organiser
“A GOOD START Sutton Cheney. - On Monday, Jan. 17, a Magic Lantern Lecture, entitled, 'Christies's Old Organ,' was given in the Schoolroom by Capt. Wood, of the 'Worchester' Van. A Service of Song bearing upon this useful little story was very creditably rendered at suitable intervals by the Sunday-school scholars and choir members. Half of the evening's admission money has been devoted to the Sunday-school Fund. On Tuesday evening, that wonderful sacred allegory, 'Pilgrim's Progress,' was brought before a large number in a very practical light; and on Wednesday the parable of 'The Prodigal Son' was portrayed in a most earnest and touching manner before a still larger audience. Friday evening brought the series of optical Lantern Lectures to a close. To a crowded room 'The Story of the Cross' was solemnly and impressively given by means of lantern and lecture, the choir reverently rendering the appropriate music. The collections amounted to £3 0s. 1d. Over 20 persons have given in their names as subscribers to the Church Army Gazette, and it is hoped that a Sewing Class may be started in connection with the movement.”
