“Among the hop pickers: The Lantern Services held nightly among the hop pickers round about the hop garders of Worcester testify to the usefulness of the Church Army Gospel Van Mission. No. 2 Van, in charge of Capt. Colman, has been stationed at Leigh Sinton, about six miles from the city of Worcester, and this Officer conducted Gospel Services each evening at the several farms. The Services commence at 8 p.m., and continue till 9.15 p.m. They are usually held under a wagon-shed, with the lantern screen fixed in an angle of the building. The singing is led by the Captain with a cornet, and the hymns are thrown on the screen, followed by an abbreviated form of Church Service also thrown on the screen. At most of the Services the Rector of Leigh conducts the first part, and the Captain follows with a Gospel Address. The largest Services this week was held at the farm of Mr. Rimiell, at which there were present some eighty adults and children, and, although the weather was chilly and the audience all standing, the attention and order were excellent; the singing and responses were also taken up quite heartily. The Service was concluded with lantern views and connective readings illustrative of the story of the 'Torn Bible,' and, upon the testimony of the Rector of Leigh, the people who were from the neighbourhood of Dudley were far more get-at-able and disposed to religion than were the natives whom he (the Rector) came in contact.”
