“Seven organisations combine: On Wednesday evening a tea and entertainment took place at Christ Church Schools. Upwards of 200 friends sat down to a capital tea, and subsequently the company assembled in the large schoolroom, where an address was given by the Rev. Canon Denton Thompson, rector of North Meols. Mr. C. A. Mather presided. The Rev. Canon Thompson, after referring to his connection with Bootle and stating that the borough would always hold in his heart a very high place, spoke of the work of the Church Army, and in the course of a practical address, said he thought the Army had done good in two directions. It had called attention to the need for greater elasticity in their church methods of labour, and has also called the attention of Churchmen to the need for more progressive work. The programme of the entertainment was then proceeded with, the initial item being an overture by the Band of Hope children, the Gleaners' Union, the Sunday School Teachers, the Children's Service Choir, and the Mission School, ending with an Optical Lantern Entertainment.”
