“'I wonder what it means?': The 'Canterbury' Van, in charge of Capt. Bull, with Cadet Johnson, has visited this parish. They received a warm welcome from the Vicar, and all connected with the Church, and by the crowded Meetings. I feel Capt. Bull will feel no regret at coming here. When the bills were first put out one could hear the people saying, 'I wonder what it means? What sort of a Van can it be?' and when it did arrive it caused some excitement, especially when it stuck fast in the mud. It seemed quite determined to remain there, for it took some time to get it out. When opening time came there was not standing room. The first Service was a Lantern Service on 'The Prodigal Son,' and was listened to with great attention, and as the week went on, and the different subjects were shown, we could see many moved to tears. Capt. Bull has such an earnest and pleasant way of speaking that he wins all hearts wherever he goes. There was great regret that the time spent in Itchen Ferry was not longer, and by what we see daily, have every reason to hope that some of the seed sown has taken firm hold. [...]”
