BALLS, Captain (fl. 1890s) – lecturer
Church Army Ely III Van – organiser
“The C.A. in the Village Pound. Fordham. – During the past three weeks the 'Ely” No.III C.A. Van has been stationed in the school yard. Capt. Balls is the Evangelist-in-Charge. Each evening a Service has been held or a Lantern Service given in one of the Schoolrooms. So popular have these Meetings become, that the room is full every night. On Friday evening, at the Lantern Lecture on 'The life of Christ”, the large room was so full that many had to go away disappointed, but the Lecture was repeated on Saturday evening for the benefit of those who could not get into the room on Friday. On Saturday last an Open-air Service was held in the afternoon on the Pound. The Fordham Brass Band played round the village and played the tunes for three hymns at the service. A very large number of people were gathered together and seemed much to appreciate the Service. In the evening, after the school, when fully 200 people assembled, the Captain gave an earnest Address on the words of Joshua – 'Choose you this day whon ye will serve; as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” The van has moved to Isleham with many prayers.”
