“Look at the top shelf. Burgess Hill. St. John’s. – On Saturday, August 1, we did not hold an open-air-service as usual, but our Curate, the Rev. Williamson, came to the St. Alban’s Mission Room and administred to as many as were religiously and devotutedly disposed, that most blessed means of grace, the Lord’s Supper. Now the very hot weather has left us the Mission Rooms fill much better. Gazettes are still going up, but our Captain is working under great difficulties, helbers being very scarce where most needed, for this is a scattered district, and it is a job for two or three to do all the work. Capt. Hurry, is not as his name implies always in haste, but wherever there is something to do he stops till it is done, and that thoroughly, wether in visiting, in the meeting house or in the open-air. One of our helpers got two long poles and two lanterns to stand each side of the harmonium at our Open-air-meeting so we can see to give out the hymns, and all can join in with the singing. The people seem quite enjoy it, they come closer round us these dark evenings like Nicodemus of old, they are perhaps afraid to be seen listening to the Gospels in the broad daylight, and so thedark evenings suit the work very well here. Our meetings are quite the talk of the place; the other evening while I and a friend were walking down the town, after meeting, I overheard one young fellow say to a male, 'I say Jim, you ought to have been at the meeting just now.” I often hear something about it. While we were conducting our meeting, Thrsday evening, August 6th, we heard that one of our neighbours was brought home, having met with an accident, and we all prayed that God would bless him and restore him again to his family. One of our Brothers said a few words to all of us, beseeching to take our bibles down from the top shelf of our cupboard and take the dust off, and read and study and pray over it. After many testimonies and some good advice from our Captain we parted at 9:30 feeling, that we had indeed had a good time.”
