“Forerunners of the Church Army: On Monday evenings our Soldiers meet at the Captain's house for a Church History Lecture. The late Canon Lloyd's interesting little book, 'The History of the English Church in short Biographical Sketches,' has been read through. The last two meetings were held in the School, and thrown upon to Sunday-school teachers. On the 16th of Sept., the Services were closed by an Illustrated Lecture, the slides being kindly lent by the C.A. Headquarters, and highly appreciated by a large audience. The Soldiers were particularly struck with the likeness between Church Army Work and that of the Friars, and trust, by God's mercy and grace, that they may be enabled to follow, in many things, their example, and make God's truth known and His will obeyed among those whom they exhort. Illustrated Lectures have been given in various parts of the parish, on the 'Life of Daniel.' May God bless the lessons which the Captain and his helpers have thus endeavoured to impress upon the eyes and minds of their hearers, by the conversion of sinners and the edification of believers.”
