“I don't understand about Jesus: During the week, we have had some good times in the gardens. On Friday evening, we had a Lantern Service, in the Mission Room, at Sands Hill, which was well filled. On Saturday night, we had a Concert, in a barn kindly lent by Mr. Hutchins for our Sunday Evening Services. By the above means, we were able to keep the hop pickers from going to the village - thus sending their money to the grocer instead of the publican, depriving the devil of a fight and the police of a case. Thanks to our Vicar and all those who helped us. On Sunday night, we had a Lantern Lecture, from the Captain, who spoke from the pictures, the 'Suffering of Christ,' together with singing, in which a number of our parish ladies and others took part. The Captain asked one young man how he liked the service. He said: 'Sir, the pictures were very nice, but I don't understand anything about Jesus; no one has taught me.' Captain then began to explain to him Jesus as the Saviour of mankind. The poor fellow went away impressed, and is coming to our next meeting. We closed the week, feeling God's blessing had attended all our efforts.”
