“We have just had our annual tea, it being Holy Cross Day, on Monday, September 14th. A free spread was given to about one hundred Sunday-school children, parents and friends paying. After tea we had a magic-lantern entertainment; and a bright and happy day was finished with a short service, Captain King reading the prayers, Captain Marklew the lessons, and the Vicar preaching a short and interesting sermon on the Cross and why the church was called Holy Cross Church. Many new faces were there, and we hope that God will bless each one, also lead them into that new life in which there is fullness of joy. Captains King and Marklew visited the station-yard of the Great Northern Railway, and the enginemen, shunters, guards, and signalmen gave eight shillings donation towards the tea, for which we were deeply thankful. ”
