ADKINS, Frank (1845-1928) – lecturer
UK Band of Hope Union – organiser
“Mr. Frank Adkins' services as a lecturer, speaker, and organising agent-chiefly in the provinces-proved invaluable. Many of the smaller local organisations which are not in a position to engage an agent, are nevertheless desirous of securing for a period the services of a gentleman who will devote his whole time to the formation of new Societies, and increasing the efficiency of those in existence. Believing this to be an important sphere of work, the Committee place Mr. Adkins' services at the disposal of local organisations at a nominal sum, the Parent Society bearing the remainder of the cost. During the year, by this means, the movement was specially benefited in the Birmingham district, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and Suffolk. An experience of the details of the Band of Hope work extending over twenty-two years, enables Mr. Adkins to give valuable advice to the Managers of the Societies he visits, whilst in addressing schools, public meetings and conferences, his services prove very useful. Mr. Adkins' services as a a lecturer with the Dissolving Views,-to a large extend in the Provinces, -also proved very valuable. In country districts it is expecially difficult to secure variety in the proceedings of the Societies, and a visit from Mr. Adkins makes a very pleasant change, and at the same time provides a first-class illustrated lecture ambodying much temperance teaching, to which not only the members of the Society but the public generally can be invited, and which frequently results in a valuable addition to the funds of the local Society. Sixty-eight Lectures with Dissolving Views were given by Mr. Adkins, at which there was an estimated attendance of 18,000 persons.”
