Catalogue of photographic transparencies for lantern slides (Birmingham: Pumphrey Brothers, 1872), 1

“All the pictures except those marked * [i.e. Old Testament 1, 4, 11, 15, 18, 22, 24, 25, 35, 42, 47, 49, 50; New Testament 1, 3, 9, 10, 13, 14, 19, 26, 27, 39, 44, 49, 52] are suitable for colouring; those marked, from the large amount of shadow, are not capable of improvement by it. Colour is by no means required more than on the original pictures.

Messrs Cassell, Petter, & Galpin having permitted the production of this the most beautiful set of Slides ever offered to the public, it is due to that firm to call attention here to their Art Volumes. That all persons may have an opportunity of inspecting at their convenience specimens of these Volumes, Messrs Cassell, Petter, & Galpin have prepared a costly Illustrated Catalogue, in the form of a handsome Album, in which will be found one or more examples of each Work. It may be seen at any first-class Bookseller's throughout the kingdom; and can, if desired, be purchased at the published price, Two Shillings and Sixpence.”

“The first set of 50, belonging to the Old Testament, commences with the Formation of Eve, and we have scenes touching Abel, the Deluge, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Samson, David, Solomon, Elijah, Job, Daniel, and so on. In the New Testament we have Wise Men guided by the Star, Sermon on the Mount, Miracles, the Annunciation, the Ascension, and other scenes taken from the illustrations by Gustave Dore' in Cassell's Holy Bible.”
