“29 Slides, Coloured. With Reading.

The hero, Harry Walters, is a young man belonging to a village in Yorkshire. His father, an upright, God-fearing man, was a small farmer. Harry occasioned his parents much anxiety by reason of his waywardness and thoughtless actions. Shortly after the story opens, Mr Walters becomes unwell, and eventually passes away, trusting in God, and happy that his son, Harry, has promised him that he will take Christ as his Saviour. Things on the farm go from bad to worse, and finally the place has to be sold up, and Mrs Walters and Harry have to live in a humbler sphere. One day Harry is led away by some companions to a neighbouring market town, who get him under the evil influence of liquor, and in that condition a recruiting sergeant gets him to enlist. His mother is almost broken-hearted, but still trusts in God. Harry goes off to the barracks, and eventually his corps is drafted to India. Harry here falls very ill, and, while in hospital, comes under the care of the chaplain, who turns out to be an old friend, and who brings him to a fuller knowledge of the love of God. Happy in the knowledge that he has now kept the promise he made his father, he finds military life less irksome, and soon has the added joy of returning home to England.”
