You may see a white-haired lady leaning upon the arm of her son

He stood alone under a lamp for nearly half-an-hour

He recollected his promise just as he got his foot on the doorstep

She could at least provide her with a splendid funeral

A little grave under the chestnuts, a soul gone home to rest

But in the green acre of heaven where somebody knows he sleeps

'O! Laddie, Laddie, Laddie, come back if 'tis but to say'

Harry was the ostler at the Green Man Inn

A flood of light steeped in glory a neighbouring range of hills

William gently seized the spade, and went carefully over the green turf again

A young man and an aged woman stood beside the grave

And aren't you surprised to find how much you do care for the beer

The flowers around his grave are very fresh and beautiful

In the summer evenings there are other visitors to that little grave

The congregation slowly left the sacred building

A grief-stricken widow and fatherless child were the chief figures

With a feeling of desolation he left his aunt's grave

I stand again in the North land, but in silence and in shame

Your grave is my only landmark, and men have forgotten my name

'Tis a tale that is truer and older than any the sages tell

'Poor woman! Poor, brave, unselfish woman'
