DE HAVILLAND, Hugh, B.A.  (1867-1952) – lecturer

Technical Instruction -- The fifth and last of the series of lectures on 'The Diseases of Plants,' was given in the Court House, Soham, on Thursday evening in last week, by Mr de Haviland, B.A. (late scholar of St Peter's College, Cambridge), Mr Alfred Slack again presiding. The lecturer explained the cause and different stages of disease in the potato in a very lucid and pleasant way, his remarks being illustrated by magic lantern views. The lecture was very instructive, and cannot fail to be of service to the practical members of the audience. An open discussion followed, in which Mr L.S. Lyon and Mr Ward took part. There was a good attendance. The next course of lectures will be on 'The Chemistry of Health'.”

Notes

The date is assumed from the newspaper account of the lecture, though it could refer to the preceding Thursday, 17 November 1892.

Many thanks to Lydia Jakobs for identifying this event.
